Tribute & Message From The Family Nick George Maheras, 56, went home to be with the Lord on May 1, 2009. After a brief battle with lung cancer, he died peacefully at home with his wife and daughters at his side. Nick was born Pericles Mitsopoulos-Makris in Patras, Greece, and was adopted into the Theodore George and Anna Drakulakos Maheras family in 1958. He was naturalized as a proud and concerned American citizen in 1962 and spent the bulk of his years in High Point. He was a graduate of High Point Central High School and U.N.C. Charlotte. He spent several years in television and print media before joining the staff of the High Point Enterprise in 1988. He covered local High Point news and religion assignments and had a way of making everyday news interesting. Nick enjoyed working out at the YMCA where he formed many valuable friendships. He spoke fondly of playing basketball for years with his friends at the Baptist Church. His greatest loves were his family members and his friends from the old neighborhood, and his Heavenly Father. He was preceded in death by his parents, his niece, and his unborn baby. Surviving are his smitten wife, Jennifer (his Jem), daughter Emily (his Rose), daughter Maria (his Ria), and the lights of his life, grandchildren Aisia and Charley. Also surviving are his stepdaughters, Ellie, Lyssa and Chelsea and his loving sister Linda and precious nieces, and family in Greece. A Celebration of Nick’s Life will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Davis Funerals & Cremations Chapel by the Rev. Mel Anderson. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 7 until 9 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Nick Maheras Special Fund at High Point Bank. The family wishes to thank Hospice of the Piedmont, the great city of High Point that gave a Greek Southern boy a good home, and the capable and compassionate services of H. Leigh Davis and Mel Anderson.
