Nita Bracy Douglas is the child of Mary Opal Mattox (1881-1952) and Elbert Arnold Douglass (1878-1956). SHe was born on Sept 14, 1903 in Bradford, Florida. She had siblings Iva (born 1906), Essie (born 1910) and Xedrie Milton Douglass (19113-1997). They were raised in Palestine, Bradford, Florida, USA. She married Albert Berry (1900-1980) and had children Nettie Mae (1921-1998), Betty Jean (born 1930), and Alfred Earnest Berry (1935-2018). Her son Al was well known as the vice president of the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce and Florida Strawberry Festival director, and her daughter, Nettie Draughon, was the Plant City Manager. Nita moved to Plant City 78 years before her death and was a longtime member of the Plant City Church of Christ and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was well-known in the area, even though she never was much involved in community organizations or projects. PLANT CITY - The mother of two of Plant City's more prominent government and business leaders died Monday night. Nita Berry was 92 and had lived in Plant City for nearly eight decades. Nita Berry was mother to Al Berry, vice president of the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce and Florida Strawberry Festival director, and Plant City Manager Nettie Draughon, She died Monday evening at the National Health Care nursing home in Plant City. A native of Bradford County, she moved to this city 78 years ago. She was a longtime member of the Plant City Church of Christ and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was well-known in the area, even though she never was much involved in community organizations or projects, said Draughon. "She was a homemaker," and that's what made her happy, the longtime city manager said. Nita Berry's husband, Albert, was a veteran of World War I. He died in 1980. Because of Albert Berry's service involvement. his wife became a American Legion auxiliary member and worked as a volunteer in the Bay Pines Veterans Administration Hospital, said Draughon. "But that was a long, long time ago," she said, adding that it might have been in the 1960s or 1970s. Al Berry said his mother had been at the nursing home since February 1995.
