Nolan E Dockery of Beaver Dam, Ohio County, KY was born on September 24, 1906 to Henry Cader Dockery and Ruby (Woodruff). He had siblings Esther Mae (Dockery), Harlan Dockery, Arlan Ray Dockery, Owen Neal Dockery, Alfred Dockery, Ruby Gladys (Dockery), and Della Dockery. Nolan Dockery married Eula (Lee), and died at age 98 years old on December 21, 2004.

In 1906, in the year that Nolan E Dockery was born, Finland became the first European country to give women the vote and to allow them to run for political office. (Women in Australia and New Zealand already had that right but couldn't run for office.) Although Finland belonged to the Russian Empire, there was great unrest and the Tsar wanted to broker a quick peace. As a part of the brokered peace, women got the vote.

In 1911, at the age of merely 5 years old, Nolan was alive when Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen became the first man to reach the South Pole, along with four fellow Norwegian explorers. After hearing that Peary had beaten him to the North Pole, Amundsen decided to tackle the South Pole. On December 14th, he succeeded.
