Norman Leslie Bridges 1886 - 1967

Norman Leslie Bridges of Ballarat, City of Ballarat County, VIC Australia was born in 1886 in Ballarat to Rose Amelia (Kittelty) Bridges and Robert Bridges. Norman Bridges had siblings Queenie Victoria Bridges, Stanley Bridges, Leonard Bridges, Lily Bridges, Robert Walter Bridges, Earl Clemence Bridges, Edgar Royce Bridges, Ivy Ruth Bridges Williams, Bertram Victor Bridges, Irene Rose (Bridges) Mcneight, and Amy Ellen Bridges Mclean. He married Ann Mary (Bennett) Bridges in 1906. They had children Ellen Elizabeth Bridges, Ellen Elizabeth Bridges, Norman Bertram Bridges, Leslie James Bridges, and Stanley Clemence Bridges. He also married Francis Maud Antonio in 1924. Norman Bridges died at age 81 years old in December 1967 in Ballarat.

In 1886, in the year that Norman Leslie Bridges was born, on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.

In 1911, Norman was 25 years old when Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen became the first man to reach the South Pole, along with four fellow Norwegian explorers. After hearing that Peary had beaten him to the North Pole, Amundsen decided to tackle the South Pole. On December 14th, he succeeded.
