Norman Malcolm Leyonhjelm 1899 - 1961

Norman Leyonhjelm was born in 1899 in Hopetoun, Yarriambiack Shire County, VIC Australia to Carl Malcolm Leyonhjelm and Anna (Stasinowsky) Leyonhjelm, and had a brother Frederick William Charles Leyonhjelm. He married Marjorie Hope (Lamont) Leyonhjelm, and had children Norma Hope Leyonhjelm, Colin Leyonhjelm, Maxwell Leyonhjelm, and Allan Leyonhjelm. Norman Leyonhjelm died at age 62 years old in 1961 in Jeparit, Hindmarsh Shire County.

In 1899, in the year that Norman Malcolm Leyonhjelm was born, the meaning of Chinese "oracle bones" was rediscovered. Farmers in China had been turning up the bones in their fields for generations but most often they were ground up and sold as medicine. The chancellor of the Imperial Academy and a friend noticed, before they ground the bones, that they had writing. The bones had been used around the second millennium BC for divination.
