O C Helton's History: 1935 - 2010

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

    O. C. Helton was larger than life, and larger than most people standing well over 6 feet. He about always wore bib coveralls and a baseball cap. A "tarheel" transplant from North Carolina, he was the guitar player and singer for the first bluegrass band in Darrington called The Whitehorse Mountaineers. They played the traditional bluegrass of Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, Jim & Jesse and Jimmy Martin. Many of these bands would play in Darrington later on. We would buy "shine" from O. C. at the festival at Darrington; $10 for a fifth of the smoothest white lightning that ever passed your lips - likely due to the fact that he made his "beer" in a silver still. I heard that he died with his recipe. I worked as an electrician at the Washington State Liquor Control warehouse in Seattle during the 80's. One day I came to work and there, just outside the security office was a palette ...... and piled on it was a moonshine still - pot, thumper and coil, the whole shebang. I asked the guard on duty where in the world they got it and he told me, "Up around Darrington ...... and look, it's lined with silver". Of course I knew immediately who's still it was. I surely didn't mention the fact that I had drunk many a jug of corn liquor that was made in that very still. Turns out old O. C. got off though. He used the old argument that his ancestors did it and he was just following tradition; kindly like the indians with their peyote buttons. So they let him off, but they kept the still. They told O. C. that he could make a small amount for his own use but could not sell any! About this time Helton had a run-in with the local building authorities. He was building a log cabin at the rodeo grounds and the county felt it wasn't code and kept siting him. One day he told me he was notified that the inspector coming so he jumped on his "Cat" and bulldozed a big pile of dirt across the entrance road so the man couldn't get in. They eventually took him to court but he won and was allowed to build the cabin as "his family had been building log cabins for hundreds of years and never a one had fell down". O. C. helped start The Darrington Bluegrass Festival in 19&77 and played guitar and sang with the band he helped form called The Whitehorse Mountaineers (After nearby Whitehorse Mountain). He played with them for many years. In the late 80's or early 90's, he mangled his right hand in a logging accident and lost the use of his ring and pinkie fingers. They were numb and O. C. felt that they were just a hindrance so he went back to the doctor and said, "Chop 'em off". So the doctor did. O. C. was big, friendly and had a great sense of humor.
