Oliver Holaday 1823 - 1910

Oliver Holaday was born on December 8, 1823 at Chatham Co., NC to Thomas Holaday Jr and Elizabeth Freeman Holaday. He married Nancy Wyatt Holaday on July 10, 1849, and they were married until death separated them on November 4, 1910. He had a child Albert Bert Holaday. Oliver Holaday died at age 86 years old on November 4, 1910 at Henry Co., IN.

  • Introduction

    Oliver Holaday, the eldest son of Thomas and Elizabeth, spent the first two and a half years of his life in Chatham County, NC. Before his 3rd birthday, he moved with his parents and siblings to Liberty Township, Henry Co., IN. They spent their first winter living in a log house with an area of 16x18 feet. In 1938, when Oliver was just fifteen years old, he began teaching school in Henry Co., IN. He taught for 13 years until 1851. He married Nancy Wyatt in July of 1849. Oliver is shown on the 1850 liberty Township census next to his father. By 1960, Oliver and Nancy had settled in Blue River Township, Henry County, IN. He was a member of the Christian church for over 30 years. He was a minister of the same church since 1845. In 1870, he opened a general mercantile store at his home place, where he continued until 1879 when his son, Marcus bought and continued to run it. In 1882 Marcus moved the store to Leonard (now known as Mooreland, IN). Oliver also worked at the boot and shoe trade for over 40 years. Oliver and Nancy lived on their well improved 90 acre farm in Blue River twnshp until their deaths. Politically, Oliver was a Republican; originally a Whig.
