Opal M Doer 1919 - 2008

Opal Myra (Maxim) Doer of Waukesha, Waukesha County, WI was born on June 14, 1919. She married Owen Bennett Edgecomb on September 12, 1937 in Dexter, Penobscot County, Maine United States and they later divorced. They had children Dawn Eileen (Edgecomb) Hodgdon - White and John Malcolm Edgecomb. She married Charles Westlake Doer on October 15, 1967, and they were married until Charles' death on September 11, 2005. Opal Doer died at age 89 years old on August 16, 2008, and was buried at Rock Island National Cemetery Section M Site 288 Bldg 118 - Rock Island Arsenal, in Rock Island, Il.

In 1919, in the year that Opal M Doer was born, the "Black Sox Scandal" rocked baseball fans during the World Series. Eight players on the Chicago White Sox were accused of throwing the World Series, thus allowing the Cincinnati Reds to win, and making money off of the losses. All of the players were found not guilty by a jury but the fallout lasted for decades. The players were banned from baseball even though they were found innocent.
