    Orland finished high school in Newcastle Pennsylvania and was active in this high school band. He played saxaphone. After he graduated, Orland moved to Michigan to attend Michigan State University for two years. He played in the University band. He was unable to finish his degree due having to return home because his father was having difficulties.

In 1902, in the year that OrlieCovert was born, about 150 thousand United Mine Workers went on strike in eastern Pennsylvania for a wage increase and more suitable hours. They eventually got a 10% raise and their workday was reduced from 10 hours to 9. Because winter was coming and most people at the time heated their homes with coal, President Teddy Roosevelt arbitrated between the owners and the workers - the first time that the Federal government arbitrated in a strike.

In 1910, at the age of merely 8 years old, Orland was alive when Thomas Edison introduced his kinetophone, which he hoped would make "talkies" a reality. But the sound wasn't synchronized to the pictures and only 45 Kinetophones were made.
