Introduction

I never knew Orval, and know very little about him. My father was devastated at the loss, and never recovered emotionally. He did remember that Orval loved the country, and that he loved to tell very long, made-up stories about places he had never been. I have a book of photos, and will post them when I can. SOme are posted on find-a-grave.

Died in the crash of a private plane, being flown by his friend and brother-in-law, Richard Higley. Orval was going to Bakersfield in order to begin hauling produce. He was going to move his family (wife and 9 year old son, my father) to Bakersfield at the end of the school year. The pilot became disoriented in heavy fog and the plane began to break apart. It crashed in an orange grove. Both men were killed.

In 1916, in the year that Orval Gateing Sullivan was born, visiting nurse Margaret Sanger opened the first birth control clinic in the U.S. at 46 Amboy St. in Brooklyn New York. Ten days after the clinic opened, Sanger was arrested for "violating laws against giving out birth control information" which was defined as obscenity. The clinic was not handing out birth control - just information about sex and birth control methods. (The Comstock law categorized information about abortion, family planning, and contraception as “obscene”.) The clinics and organizations that Sanger established later evolved into the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

In 1921, Orval was just 5 years old when hugely popular Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, silent film star, was arrested for rape and manslaughter after an actress died following a party at his house. He was acquitted after three trials and the jury wrote a formal letter apologizing for the charges, but his career never recovered. His films were at first banned - the ban was lifted after a year - and he was mostly ostracized by the community. He died at 46..
