Orval Zuerlein of Fremont, Dodge County, Nebraska United States was born on September 8, 1917 to Frank L. Zuerlein and Rose F. Moeller Zuerlein. He had siblings Francis W Zuerlein, Edward George Zuerlein Sr., Bruno John Zuerlein, Elaine Zuerlein Smith, Richard L. Zuerlein, Avis Zuerlein Percy, Bonnie Zuerlein Brdicko, Leonard Zuerlein, Frank "Fritz" Zuerlein, and James "Jimmy" Zuerlein. Orval Zuerlein died at age 61 years old in June 1979 in Fremont.

In 1917, in the year that Orval Zuerlein was born, it is believed that a worldwide influenza pandemic began in Asia. In 1937, Orval was 20 years old when on May 6th, the German zeppelin the Hindenburg caught fire and blew up. The Hindenburg was a passenger ship traveling to Frankfurt Germany. It tried to dock in New Jersey, one of the stops, and something went wrong - it blew up. Thirty-six people were killed out of the 97 on board - 13 passengers, 22 crewmen, and one ground worker. The reasons for the explosion are still disputed.
