The summer after my freshman year (and only year) at Adelphi College, Garden City, NY, I took a job as a day camp counselor for the summer. The year was 1962, and I was 18 years old. I don't remember the name of the day camp, but we would all meet at Suburban Reform Temple in Wantagh, NY, and then would be bussed with the campers to Sunken Meadow State Park, for a day of swimming and many other activities, some of which we would lead. Owen Hoey was also a camp counselor that summer. He was very handsome, and had a very friendly, kind, and fun-loving personality. We were both leaders of a group of campers - I had 9 girls, and he had a group of boys. I remember none of the other couselors, but I have always remembered Owen. His wonderful fun personality and sandy-haired good looks made him special. I guess I rather had a crush on him.
I feel sad that he died so young - only 61 years old. I see that he fought in Vietnam, and perhaps that had negative health repercussions for him.
Although I did not know him well, he made a very positive impression on me, so that I have remembered him all through the years. I am sorry that the smiling, handsome young man that I once knew is no longer in this world.
