  • Early Life & Education

Patricia “Patty” Donahue was two years old when her parents divorced, and her mother raised her to be a strong and independent woman. Patty attended Saint Joseph Academy in Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated in 1974. After trying out several colleges, she found herself studying at Kent State, and working as a waitress, when she met Chris Butler. Chris, a musician, who had recently come up with a band idea and needed a singer, asked a bar of people if anybody was interested in joining him, and Patty responded.
  • Professional Career

By 1982, The Waitresses had formed to completion, with Patty remaining in place as the lead singer. Their first album, “Wasn’t Tomorrow Wonderful?”, was released early that year, and “I Know What Boys Like” became a massive hit. Previously, they had been notable for their 1981 single “Christmas Wrapping”. By 1983, tensions between Donahue and Butler arose, and the band slowly fell apart, before disbanding entirely around 1984. However, during this time, they recorded and released a second album, “Bruiseology”.
  • Personal Life & Family

Patty did not marry or have children, according to sources online. She spent most of her adult life living in Manhattan, New York, and found work as a file clerk sometime after The Waitresses disbanded. Later, she was hired as a talent scout for MCA Records. After many years of heavy smoking, Patty developed lung cancer, and passed away, aged forty, in late 1996. She was survived by her mother, Joan, and sister, Barbara.
