Patrick Joseph Conway 1866 - 1947

Patrick Joseph Conway of Sydney Australia was born on October 18, 1866 at Mount William near Goldie, in Macedon Shire County, Victoria to Thomas Conway and Bridget Conway. He married Annie Elizabeth (Quinane) Conway on February 26, 1895 in Drysdale, Greater Geelong City County, and they were married until Annie's death on August 15, 1913. He had children Bridget Donovan Conway, Mary (Conway) Conlon, Thomas Conway, and Patrick Conway. Patrick Conway died at age 80 years old on July 6, 1947 in Randwick, City of Randwick County, NSW, and was buried at Catholic Cemetery, Rookwood, in Lidcombe.

In 1884, by the time he was 18 years old, on May 1st, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions - a US association - first resolved that "eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labour from and after May 1, 1886, and that we recommend to labour organisations throughout this jurisdiction that they so direct their laws as to conform to this resolution by the time named." Previously, workdays would consist of 10 to 16 hours a day - 6 days a week. It would take years before the 8 hour workday became common practice - and longer before it became a law.
