    Paul DeGasperis is the son of Dominico De Gasperis (1894-1982) and Anna Dirollo (born 1896). He was born on Septembe 1, 1920 in the Sora Province of Italy. He had a younger brother, Louis DeGasperis. On June 21, 1941 he married Lucille Carrier (1922-2018) in Royal Oak, Oakland, Michigan, USA. The couple had three sons together Paul Jr, Robert, and Dominick DeGasperis. A few years after getting married, Paul joined the US military on July 13, 1944 and served until January 18, 1946.

In 1920, in the year that Paul Degasperis was born, on January 1, over 6000 people were arrested and put in prison because they were suspected of being communists. . Many had to be released in a few weeks and only 3 guns were found in their homes. The U.S. Department of Justice "red hunt" netted thousands of "radicals" and suspected "communists" and aliens were deported. But the "hunt" ended after Attorney General Palmer forecast a massive radical uprising on May Day and the day passed without incident.

In 1935, Paul was just 15 years old when on September 8th, Louisiana Senator Huey Long was shot by Dr. Carl Weiss. Weiss was shot and killed immediately by Long's bodyguards - Long died two days later from his injuries. Long had received many death threats previously, as well as threats against his family. He was a powerful and controversial figure in Louisiana politics (and probably gained power through multiple criminal acts). His opponents became frustrated with their attempts to oust him and Dr. Weiss was the son-in-law of one of those opponents. His funeral was attended by 200,000 mourners.
