He married Mary Eliza (Fuller) Talay, and had children Robert Charles Talay, Paul Eugene Talay, Leon Neil Talay, and Francis Henry Talay. Paul Talay died at age 59 years old in 1922 in Fitzroy.

In 1863, in the year that Paul Louis Eugene Talay was born, on January 1st, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. The Proclamation made the abolition of slavery in the Confederate states an official war goal.
