Paul was of Carpatho-Rusyn and Slovak descent although both he and his wife were patriotic Slovaks and did, as rumored in the family, secretive work for the independence and freedom of the nation. Baba had a particular dislike for communists and while Paul worked as a marine carpenter at the Jersey City docks, he sent money back to Baba where she and the children were living in Úbrež to buy more land in raising flax and livestock. All of this was lost in the years leading up to WW2 when they moved back to the United States for the last time in 1929. Paul has variously been listed as Reformed, Calvinist, and Presbyterian for his religious faith although his family were likely "Greek Catholic" before the protestant fervor swept through the region. Although he was raised in Závadka, a former Greek Catholic village, his baptismal record was kept in the neighboring Reformed village of Lúčky. He did carpentry work for his Presbyterian Church in Jersey City. Šáriks from present-day Užhorod were still Greek Catholics. "Greek Catholic" can most simply be defined as a separate rite within Catholicism created for the formerly Eastern Orthodox people came under the authority of Rome after the Union of Brest in 1595 when the region came under the rule of the Hapsburgs. Having been born in the pre-World War I state of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, Paul's birth and baptism were first recorded in the official state language of Hungarian as Pál Sarik. After the creation of the tripartite state of Czechoslovakia, the official language of his region was Slovak and his name on the officially issued birth certificate he obtained as an adult in his place of birth was recorded as Pavel Šárik. Once he obtained American citizenship, his name was designated as Paul Sarik on the official certificate. Šáriks have been found scattered throughout the Carpatho-Rusyn diaspora from eastern Slovakia into Užhorod in present-day Ukraine and in the Carpatho-Rusyn communities of the former Yugoslavia (primarily Serbia). Šárik means round or ball and by extension, has become a common name for dogs in Russia, although it is still found as a surname in the peripheral areas of Russia and Russian influence. This said, it is important to note that the Carpatho-Rusyn people are a distinct but stateless nation originating from farther north. The people comprising present-day ethnic Slovaks are primarily influenced by migrations from in or near present-day Slovenia; hence, the similarity of language and ethnicity.
