Introduction

Paul Smith Gillespie was born in Paris, Ontario, Canada, in 1903. His parents were Geo Henry Gillespie and Letitia Smith. He was a severe asthmatic, and he apparently looked like Robert Redford. He married Lily Barnden in 1936, and they had six children together, the last being born in 1944. He left the family home in Canard River, Ontario unexpectedly in 1948, resurfacing in Enid, Oklahoma where he married Dollie Bell Gum in 1950. He and Dollie moved to Montrose, Colorado in 1958, and they lived there until their respective deaths - Paul in 1971 and Dollie in 2011. They had no children.

In 1903, in the year that Paul Smith Gillespie was born, the Ford Motor Company was incorporated in June after Henry Ford left another car company he founded in 1901 (which became the Cadillac Motor Company). He began Ford Motor Company with $28,000 in cash from twelve investors, two of whom (the Dodge brothers) later began their own car company. Henry Ford improved on assembly line techniques and has been so successful that his family still controls a very popular Ford line of cars and trucks.

In 1934, he was 31 years old when on November 11th 1933, an extremely strong dust storm hit South Dakota, stripping topsoil. Other strong dust storms had occurred during 1933. Severe droughts continued to hit the Great Plains and the dust storms devastated agricultural production as well as people's' lives for several years. The Roosevelt administration and scientists eventually determined that farming practices had caused the conditions that led to the dust storms and the changes they implemented in farming stopped the Dust Bowl.
