    Posted: Tuesday, May 9, 2006 12:00 am Pauline Coleman Winn was born on Oct. 13, 1925 to Saunders and Hallie Mae Baskerville Coleman in Lunenburg County. She was the fourth child of five siblings; and was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Lucius Winn Jr. and four siblings, May Bell Coleman Valentine, Thornton Coleman, Drewry Coleman, and Andrew Coleman, Sr. She grew up in Lunenburg County and attended Camp School. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Flat Rock Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful member until her death. She served as a deaconess, church treasurer, missionary, sung with the senior choir for over 30 years and served as president. She was also the church secretary and sexton for many years. She was united in holy matrimony to Lucius Winn in January 1942. To this union, seven sons and four daughters were born. Her children were the joy of her life. She was a homemaker and was employed in various occupations and retired from Diemolding Corporation after more than 20 years of service. She is survived by her husband, Lucius Winn, of more than 65 years of marriage; her children, Hazel Stokes (Henry), Lawrence Winn (Mae), Phyllis Jones (Charles), Howard Winn (Jerlene), Roy Winn (Josie), Dorothy Freeman (Linwood), Larry Winn (Nancy), Carlize Winn (Madelyn), Darlene Derricott (Lindsey) and Michael Winn; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held May 3 at Flat Rock Baptist Church in Kenbridge with the Rev. Dr. Herman Lundy officiating. Interment followed in Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery. S. P. In 1925, in the year that Pauline C Winn was born, in July, the Scopes Trial - often called the Scopes Monkey Trial - took place, prosecuting a substitute teacher for teaching evolution in school. Tennessee had enacted a law that said it was "unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school". William Jennings Bryan headed the prosecution and Clarence Darrow headed the defense. The teacher was found guilty and fined $100. An appeal to the Supreme Court of Tennessee upheld the law but overturned the guilty verdict.
