Pauline Charmian Shadgett 1915 - 1994

Pauline Charmian (Watmuff) Shadgett Mrs of 1 Paisley Avenue, in Torrens Park, SA Australia was born on March 26, 1915 in Wilcannia, Central Darling Shire Council County, NSW to Henry Bertram Watmuff and Olive Marie (Vandenberg) Watmuff. She had siblings Olga Watmuff and Bertram Melville Watmuff. She married Dudley William Shadgett, and they were married until Dudley's death on February 28, 1989. She had a child Andrew Dudley Shadgett. Pauline Shadgett died at age 79 years old in June 1994 at Manley Hospital 150 Darley Road - Manley, in Sydney, and was buried on June 18, 1994.

  • Introduction

    She was my much loved and adored mother-in-law, and grandmother of my two sons, Benjamin Andrew Shadgett and Timothy Joseph Shadgett. She was born in Wilcannia, New South Wales, I believe in 1915. Her last residence was 1 Paisley Avenue, Torrens Park, SA. Her only child, Andrew Dudley Shadgett, my late husband, died on 16/12/1984 in Mildura Victoria, following a car accident outside of Ouyen, on the same day. His wife, Gaye Patricia Shadgett (now Bockman), and their two sons survived the accident.

In 1915, in the year that Pauline Charmian Shadgett was born, the Germans first used poison gas as a weapon at the second Battle of Ypres during World War I. While noxious gases had been used since ancient times, this was the first use of poisonous gas - in this case, lethal chlorine gas - in modern war. Subsequently, the French and British - as well as the United States when they entered World War 1 - developed and used lethal gas in war.

In 1920, at the age of just 5 years old, Pauline was alive when on November 2, radio station KDKA began broadcasting in Pittsburgh, PA. This was the first commercial radio broadcast in the United States. Westinghouse, a leading manufacturer of radios and the backer of the station, chose the date because of the Presidential election. People liked it because they could hear about the results of the election between Harding and Cox before the morning papers arrived. Four years later, there were 600 commercial stations broadcasting in the U.S.
