Percy Charles Westmore 1883 - 1939

Percy Westmore was born in 1883 to William Wescott Westmore and Jemima " Minnie" Pine Westmore, and had siblings Bertie Albert Westmore, Edith Pine (Westmore) Muirhead, Ernest Norman Wescott Westmore, Herbert William Wescott Westmore, and William Frederick Westmore. He married Florence Austin Westmore ( Eyers, and had children Mavis Westmore, Eric Charles Westmore, Alan Westmore, Keith Westmore, and Florence Westmore. Percy Westmore died at age 55 years old on June 7, 1939 in Coburg, Moreland City County, VIC Australia, and was buried at Fawkner Memorial Park 1187 Sydney Rd, in Fawkner.

In 1883, in the year that Percy Charles Westmore was born, from August 26th through August 27th, Krakatoa - in Indonesia - erupted. 70% of the island - 163 villages - were destroyed and more than 36,400 people were killed by the eruption and the tsunami resulting from it. It was one of the deadliest volcanic eruptions ever.

In 1899, Percy was 16 years old when the meaning of Chinese "oracle bones" was rediscovered. Farmers in China had been turning up the bones in their fields for generations but most often they were ground up and sold as medicine. The chancellor of the Imperial Academy and a friend noticed, before they ground the bones, that they had writing. The bones had been used around the second millennium BC for divination.
