New York Newsday - 19 June 2014 KLICAS - Peter M., aged 89, of Lynbrook, NY died on June 17, 2014. Beloved husband of the late Teresa. Devoted father of Mary Margaret Rapp, Kathy (Tom) Jaffa, Ellen (Ted) Smiecinski, and Patricia (Sean) Walsh. Adored grandfather of eight and great-grandfather of one. Proud and decorated WWII Veteran who was a recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for bravery. Services held at Macken Mortuary, Rockville Centre, NY. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Peace, Lynbrook, NY. Interment at Cemetery of the Holy Rood, Westbury, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Disabled American Veterans, Lynbrook, NY.

In 1925, in the year that Peter Matthew Klicas was born, in July, the Scopes Trial - often called the Scopes Monkey Trial - took place, prosecuting a substitute teacher for teaching evolution in school. Tennessee had enacted a law that said it was "unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school". William Jennings Bryan headed the prosecution and Clarence Darrow headed the defense. The teacher was found guilty and fined $100. An appeal to the Supreme Court of Tennessee upheld the law but overturned the guilty verdict.

In 1947, by the time he was 22 years old, on November 25th, the Hollywood "Black List" was created by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). Ten Hollywood writers and directors had refused to testify to the Committee regarding "Communists" or "Reds" in the movie industry. The next day, the blacklist was created and they were fired.
