Pietro Rinaldi came to America from Leonforte, Sicily in 1910, but he returned a year later and got married and had a son. Sadly, my grandfather's wife died suddenly after giving birth, and my grandfather returned to America in 1913. He met his second wife in Cleveland, Ohio in the 1920s and they married and moved to Chicago where my father was born in 1935. My grandfather became an American citizen in 1935, and this is when our surname was violated to Renardo. Sadly, my grandmother also died young, in 1937, so my grandfather raised four children during the Great Depression and they suffered extreme poverty, but they survived. Now, I have been back to Leonforte five times, and I keep in touch with my cousins from my grandfather's first son's children and grandchildren. I have kept our heritage alive, and I even slept in the same house my nonno was born back in 1892.
