  • Obituary

He was my grandfather. My father (his son-in-law) said he was an excellent carpenter who could build anything. I remember once he drove me to kindergarten (PS 91 in Queens, NY) in his pick up truck and I was so proud to arrive in style! His heart was broken when his wife, my grandmother Angelina Morreale Vatter, died of cancer in the early 1960's. He drank a lot after that, and left NY. We did not hear from him until his death. His death certificate said that William A. Schulz of Catalpa Avenue, NY, my other grandfather, provided some information. the grandchildren called him "Poppy Pete," and we loved him. I have a book or stories and cartoons written by James Thurber (Thurber Carnival) that contains the signature of Peter Vatter.
