    Joined the Dutch army at the start of 1790, at the age of nearly 15 years, as drummer boy. Became part of the French army, 124th Regiment du Ligne, when Napoleon annexed the Netherlands. After the defeat of Napoleon and the renewed independence of the Netherlands, he resumed service there and joined the troops that were sent to the colonies in the East (nowadays Indonesia). There he died as lieutenant-colonel and commander of the Battery "Fort Oranje" on the island of Ternate, in the Moluccas (aka Maluku).

    Newspaper - Bataviasche courant, October 13, 20 and 27, 1821: "Het behaagde God op den 12 dezer s'avonds ten half 11 uren, door den dood van mij weg te nemen mijnen tedergeliefden echtgenoot Philip Jacobus Kuip, laatstelijk luitenant kolonel en kommandant van het Fort Oranje, aan de gevolgen eener ontsteking in de lever in den ouderdom van ruim 47 jaren. Ieder zal beseffen wat ik in hem verlies, daar hij mij met 6 nog onmondige kinderen, die hun groot verlies nog niet kunnen bezeffen achterlaat. C. BOLK wed. P. J. Kuip Fort Oranje, 13 september 1821"

It was a spectacular ceremony - even the Pope attended - and Napoleon and Josephine's garments were expensive and lavish. Napoleon lifted the crown to his own head, effectively naming himself Emperor. After the actual coronation, street musicians and peddlers entertained the crowds in the streets.
