Philip Thomas Heywood of Albury, NSW Australia was born in 1856 in Pentridge, Victoria to John George Heywood and Sophia Elizabeth Hellyer. He had siblings Clara Sophia Heywood, William Reginald Heywood, Frederick Hellyer Heywood, Alice Mary Heywood, John Gough Heywood, and Fanny Elizabeth Heywood. He married Amy Philippa Harriman, and had children Muriel Amy Isabel Heywood, Phyllis Ellen Maie Heywood, and Philip Harriman Heywood. Philip Heywood died at age 85 years old on December 23, 1942 at Woorinyan in Morven, NSW.

In 1856, in the year that Philip Thomas Heywood was born, on January 26th the Battle of Seattle occurred. Marines from the ship the USS Decatur, stationed in Elliott Bay, along with about 50 Seattle settlers, fought Native Americans in the area. Territorial Governor Isaac Stevens had declared a "war of extermination" on Native communities 5 days before.

The Philippines objected to the Treaty of Paris, signed in 1898, that transferred possession of the Philippines from Spain to the U.S. Filipinos began a fight for independence and fighting between U.S. forces and those of the Philippine Republic broke out. On June 2nd, the Philippines officially declared war on the United States.
