He had siblings Edgar Gillihan, Kathlyn Wright, and Florice "Gillie" Gillihan. He married Elsie Modell Gillihan, and had children Phyllis Elise Rice, Rita Lynn Gillihan, Phillip Michael Gillihan, and Stephen Patrick Gillihan. Phillip Gillihan died at age 78 years old on November 13, 1996 in Paducah.

Phillip was an electrical contractor and owned a business in Paducah, KY, called Kentucky Electric Company. Having had the desire to own a bar-b-q restaurant for some time, he and his wife, Elsie Cress Gillihan, closed the electrical business and opened Phil's Bar-b-q in the same location. Elsie made the sauce from a recipe her brother Taylor Cress created when he also owned a bar-b-q restaurant.
