Phillip Jennings Harbutt of Artarmon, City of Willoughby County, NSW Australia was born in 1903 to Helier Harbutt and Eva (Wood) Harbutt. He had siblings Warwick Leigh Harbutt, Lloyd Gray Harbutt, Winsome Kathleen (Harbutt) Hoskins, Eva Joan (Harbutt) Wilkinson, and Elizabeth Patricia (Harbutt) Thomas. He married Therese (Halberg) Harbutt, and died at age 34 years old on September 9, 1938 in Gordon, Ku-ring-gai Council County. Phillip Harbutt was buried at Northern Suburbs Memorial Gardens and Crematorium 199 Delhi Rd, in North Ryde, City of Ryde County.

In 1903, in the year that Phillip Jennings Harbutt was born, the Harley-Davidson Motor Company was begun by two childhood friends, William Harley and Arthur Davidson - with help from Arthur's brother, Walter. Their first prototype - a "motor-bicycle" - couldn't climb hills without also pedaling, so they went back to the drawing board, and in 1904 their new version came in 4th in a race. Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company were the only two major motorcycle companies to survive the Great Depression.

In 1911, he was merely 8 years old when the first Indianapolis 500 was run in May. Ray Harroun was the winner - he was an engineer and had retired from racing but he came back for this race. After the race, he retired for good. The purse was $27,550 - the largest offered up to that time - and Harroun received $10,000 for first place. His average time was 74.602 mph.
