    MOUZOURAKIS PHYLLIS age 70, born in San Francisco, California on September 5, 1943, passed away on March 4, 2014, in Garden City, Michigan. Loving mother of Michael (Vickie), Katherine (Jeffrey) and Nicholas. Dearest sister to Nick (Kathy). Cherished grandmother of Elaina (Bill), Christie and Brittany, and beloved great grandmother of Ari, Ava and Layla. The majority of Phyllis' upbringing and fondest memories took place in the Children's Village on 6 Mile Road in Redford, Michigan. Phyllis graduated from Redford Union High School in 1961. In 1963, she married Constantinos Mouzourakis who she had known since 12 years of age. Phyllis' interests included reading, cooking, movies, family dinners, anything and everything involving Elvis Presley, grammar and shorthand, her cats, Wheel of Fortune, word puzzles, and most importantly, a selfless and genuine love for her entire family. A Memorial Visitation will be held on Friday, March 7 from 3-8 p.m. with a Trisagion service at 7:30 p.m. at Husband Family Funeral Home at 2401 S Wayne Rd., Westland, MI 48186. Those who so desire may make memorial donations in memory of Phyllis to: Dearborn Animal Shelter, 2661 Greenfield Road Dearborn, MI 48120 or Detroit Public TV Member Services, Detroit Public Television,1 Clover Court, Wixom, MI 48393-2247.

In 1943, in the year that Phyllis Chris (Koskos) Mouzourakis was born, on June 20th through June 22nd, the Detroit Race Riot erupted at Belle Isle Park. The rioting spread throughout the city (made worse by false rumors of attacks on blacks and whites) and resulted in the deployment of 6,000 Federal troops. 34 people were killed, (25 of them black) - mostly by white police or National Guardsmen, 433 were wounded (75 percent of them black) and an estimated $2 million of property was destroyed. The same summer, there were riots in Beaumont, Texas and Harlem, New York.
