In 1806, in the year that Piotr Demkiewicz was born, Noah Webster published his first dictionary, A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language. It was the first truly American dictionary, incorporating the idioms and language of the day. Thus began his effort to standardize the American language, which was regionally different. It took him 26 years to complete the entire project.

In 1825, on October 26th, the Erie Canal opened. Construction had begun in 1817 and the completion of the canal provided passage from Albany New York to Buffalo New York and Lake Erie. Previously, pack animals had to be used to transport goods - there were no railroads - and the canal allowed goods to be shipped relatively easily and quickly.
