In 1829, in the year that Pleas Mckinney was born, on May 6th, the patent for an instrument called an "accordion" was applied for by German citizen Cyrill Demian. The patent described the accordion this way: "Its appearance essentially consists of a little box with feathers of metal plates and bellows fixed to it, in such a way that it can easily be carried, and therefore traveling visitors to the country will appreciate the instrument."

In 1865, when this person was 36 years old, on April 9th, Confederate Army General Robert E. Lee surrendered to the Union Army at Appomattox Court House. Lee's surrender led to a series of surrenders in the Confederacy and in 1866 President Johnson issued a "Proclamation—Declaring that Peace, Order, Tranquility, and Civil Authority Now Exists in and Throughout the Whole of the United States of America".
