In 1806, in the year that Polly Kent was born, on May 30th, Andrew Jackson killed Charles Dickinson in a duel. Dickinson accused Jackson of cheating on a bet, then insulted his wife Rachel - accusing her of bigamy. Although Dickinson had the first shot - and hit Jackson in the chest, near his heart - Jackson shot (maybe twice, which would have been illegal) and killed Dickinson. Although it is thought that Jackson fought anywhere from 5 to 100 duels (he had a bad temper), he won a run for President in 1829.

In 1811, when she was merely 5 years old, on December 16th, the New Madrid earthquake - in the Mississippi Valley near the city of New Madrid, Missouri - temporarily reversed the course of the Mississippi River. The quake is estimated to have been 7.5 - 7.9. Other large earthquakes along the fault occurred on January 23rd and February 7th, 1812. These quakes were the largest ever recorded east of the Rockies.

In 1847, Polly was 41 years old when on May 7th, In Philadelphia, an association of physicians and medical students was founded - the American Medical Association or AMA. The association, the first of its kind, wanted to create uniform standards for medical training, education, and practices.

In 1855, at the age of 49 years old, Polly was alive when on June 29th, The Daily Telegraph began in London. The newspaper began as The Daily Telegraph and Courier and still has the reputation of being a quality paper.

In 1876, in the year of Polly Kent's passing, on July 4th, the United States celebrated its centennial. There were parades, music, speeches and fireworks - even in Union Square in New York City. Suffragettes also marched for equal rights and the vote for women.
