His mother Esther was born around 1900 in North Dakota and resided in Kinloss, Walsh, North Dakota, USA and Binford, Griggs, North Dakota, USA. In the 1930's she moved to Minnesota residing in Rural, Otter Tail, Minnesota and Bertha, Todd, Minnesota, USA. She passed away in 1950. His father George was born on December 23, 1896 in North Dakota. He resided in Binford, Griggs, North Dakota, USA and then moved to Minnesota in the 1930's residing in Rural, Otter Tail, Minnesota and Bertha, Todd, Minnesota, USA. He was a cashier at a bank. George passed away on February 4, 1978.

    He graduated from Bertha High School, Bertha, MN in 1945, as the class Valedictorian. Shortly after graduation, he was drafted into the Army. Quentin served for two years, and after his discharge in December of 1947, he enrolled at Augsburg College the following semester. He graduated in 1950. He continued his education and received his Master of Theology degree from Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN, in 1957.

    After he finished high school, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Quentin enlisted on September 25, 1945 in Ft Leavenworth Kansas as a private with Military serial#: 37807301. He was honorably discharged in December of 1947.
  • Professional Career

    He taught History and English at Brooten High School, Brooten, MN where he met his future wife, fellow teacher Lucille Njus. After receiving his Master of Theology degree from Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN, in 1957, Quentin fulfilled pastoral duties in Sharon, ND, Randall-Story City, IA, Ames, IA, Des Moines, IA, and Onawa, IA. In 1992, he retired from the ministry, relocating with Lucille to Sioux Falls, SD. Even in retirement, he continued to contribute by serving as a pastor supply in nearby parishes for several years.

    Quentin Griffith Quanbeck married Lucille Njus on August 30, 1953. Quentin enjoyed music, reading, history, painting, art work and any activity that involved family or friends. He sometimes used his artistic talent to illustrate children's sermons or a Lenten series. He also liked to chronicle family history through photography and home movies. He was a devoted husband and father.

    Rev. Quentin Quanbeck, 83, passed away February 18, 2011 at his home following a long hospitalization. Quentin Quanbeck, lived in Binford, ND and Pelican Rapids, MN, as a young child. After graduation as class Valedictorian from Bertha High School, Bertha, MN in 1945, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged in December of 1947 and enrolled at Augsburg College the following semester. After graduating from Augsburg College in 1950, he taught History and English at Brooten High School, Brooten, MN where he met his future wife, fellow teacher Lucille Njus. They were married August 30, 1953. He received his Master of Theology degree from Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN, in 1957. Quentin served parishes in Sharon, ND, Randall-Story City, IA, Ames, IA, Des Moines, IA, and Onawa, IA. He retired from the ministry in 1992, when he and Lucille moved to Sioux Falls, SD. For several years he served as pastor supply in neighboring parishes. Quentin enjoyed music, reading, history, painting, art work and any activity that involved family or friends. He was a devoted husband and father. Quentin was preceded in death by his parents, niece, Joan Quanbeck, aunt and stepmother Agnes (Myra) Quanbeck. Memorials may be directed to Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN, Gloria Dei Building Fund, or memorial of donor's choice.

In 1934, Quentin was just 7 years old when on November 11th 1933, an extremely strong dust storm hit South Dakota, stripping topsoil. Other strong dust storms had occurred during 1933. Severe droughts continued to hit the Great Plains and the dust storms devastated agricultural production as well as people's' lives for several years. The Roosevelt administration and scientists eventually determined that farming practices had caused the conditions that led to the dust storms and the changes they implemented in farming stopped the Dust Bowl.
