  • Early Life & Education

Quintana was the daughter of famous writers John Gregory Dunne and Joan Didion. They could not have children of their own, and adopted Quintana shortly after her birth. She was named for the Mexican state on the Yucatán Peninsula. As a child, she exhibited neurotic behavior, and in adulthood was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. Quintana struggled with alcoholism due to her poor mental health and her unique history as an adopted child; her birth family would later track her down and meet her, though this would only add despair to Quintana’s life. Dunne-Michael worked as a photographer and photo editor.
  • Personal Life & Family

In late 2003, shortly after her marriage to a musician named Gerald Brian “Gerry” Michael, Quintana became ill with some sort of flu. This would be the beginning of a spiraling health decline. As her condition progressed into pneumonia, and then sepsis, she remained in a comatose-like state, going in and out of consciousness. During this time, her father John Gregory Dunne had died of a heart attack, and she had to be reminded several times in a state of confusion. Later, Quintana seemed to have recovered from the illness, and was able to attend her father’s funeral (several months after his death), before she made plans to fly out to California with her husband. At the airport, she hit her head from a fall, and developed a hematoma. Though attempts were made to bring Quintana back to stability, she then developed acute pancreatitis and eventually succumbed due to the illness.
