    Rafael Mascorro was born in Rancho San Rafael, Brownsville, Texas, Cameron County off of Southmost Road. He was baptisted at Inmaculate Conception Cathedral on Mar. 25, 1883 and born Apr. 20, 1882. Rafael Mascorro was married to Pomposa Trevino on Sept. 3, 1915 in Brownsville, Texas at Inmaculate Conception Cathedral. He died Sept. 1, 1928 due to tuberculosis, and is buried at City Cemetery of Brownsville, in Brownsville, Texas. Rafael and Pomposa had the following children, Antonio, Anselmo, Maria, Jorge, and San Juanita Mascorro.

In 1882, in the year that Rafael Mascorro was born, on August 3rd, President Chester Arthur signed the 1882 Immigration Act. "Criminals, the insane, or any person unable to take care of him or herself" were not allowed in the U.S. according to the Act. It also imposed a "head tax" on non-citizens entering the U.S.

In 1895, he was merely 13 years old when on March 15th, in County Tipperary, Ireland, Michael Cleary killed his wife of 8 years, Bridget, and burned her body. His defense was that his "wife" was a changeling that was left in his real wife's place when she was abducted by fairies. He was nonetheless convicted and imprisoned for manslaughter. He spent 15 years in prison.
