Ra was born in Mongonui, Auckland Prov., New Zealand 19 September, 1905.This date of birth is from his sworn Attestation Papers on enlistment. I have talked to people who knew this gentleman and their memories of him are very vivid. Such was the impression he made on people. He was killed by Italian torpedo bombers while part of a convoy on the Mediterranean Sea. The story goes that from time of detonation to the ship sinking was some 31/2 minutes. Those below deck would have had no chance or at best slim chance of reaching the main deck before this time had expired. The bodies still as far as known still rest within the hull of Chakdina. Ra has the unusual distinction with the family of being mentioned on two headstones or memorial stones one in El Alamein the other in Dunedin, New Zealand.
