    I understand that I was named after Ralph. He was a childhood friend of my father. They scouted together. They had a last cycling holiday up the Thames to RAF Benson as the battle of Britain raged overhead before joining up. He was adopted.

    Ralph’s parents separated while he was young. His father could not look after him so he was taken in by Mary Murphy and raised with her children, James, Terry and Eleanor (Nell). Ralph was killed in action while serving with 92 Squadron. 92 squadron had arrived in the Middle East in April 1942 but had no aircraft. On 2nd June 13 pilots were sent on temporary detachment to operate with 80 Squadron at landing ground 92 flying hurricanes. At 13:20 on 17th of July, 11 aircraft took of to provide top cover to 238 Squadron. While returning from this sortie they were jumped by 30 ME109s. 4 hurricanes were shot down. Two pilots were killed, one was taken prisoner and one managed to get back to allied lines. Ralph was one of the pilots killed.
