  • Introduction

    Ralph Blanton was born on a farm in Alabama; he had two sisters and eight brothers. He was the third youngest. His mother taught him to read with the KJV Bible. He was the first in his family to finish high school. He graduated in 1929. He was offered a football scholarship to the University of Alabama, but he was so poor and the Great Depression had started, so he joined the U.S. Marines instead. He spent his tour of duty in Asia, stationed in Shanghai at the consulate, then in Beijing at the consulate. He visited the Great Wall of China and had his photo taken standing on the wall. Then he was stationed in Manila, the Philippines. After four years, he returned to Alabama, but he had trouble finding work, so he went to Virginia to work the coal mines. However, when the union found out he had a diploma, he was voted President of the local miners union and he did not have to work in the mines. He made $150 a month as President of the Union. In high school, he had met Lois Rachel Tubbs and they had corresponded with each other ever since. By 1940, he had returned to Alabama and began courting her. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the army and he and Lois were married in April 1942. Ralph was made a drill sergeant and trained other men to become soldiers. In December 1943 his daughter June Anne Blanton was born in Georgia. In 1944, he volunteered for flight duty in the Army Air Corps. and ended the war as radio operator on B-29s. After the war, he chose to stay with the United States Air Force. His son Jerry Cain Blanton was born in Jasper, Alabama, in January 1946. During the Korean War, Ralph was stationed in Nagoya, Japan. He was stationed Spokane, WA; Livermore, CA; Cheyenne, WY before he retired from the military in 1958. He then studied at Livingston State Teacher's College and received a B.A. in early childhood education. Then he taught elementary school in Eau Gallie, Florida, for nine years.
