Randy was a dear friend. He was a second chance dad to me during a turbulent time in my adolescence and helped me by his presence and direction. I will always miss him.

Mr. Randolph Spreen was the discipline man at Miami Senior High when I was a student at that great school. He was a tough character, but also fair. At a time when I could have taken a wrong turn in my youth, Randy, as I came to know him, took a special interest in me and helped me navigate the choppy waters of my late teen years.

My father died when I was four years old and my mother never married again. As a young boy and teenager I tried to figure out what being a man was all about. I had a short fuse and got into some trouble. Randy was one of the several “second chance fathers” that God sent my way to guide me through the journey to adulthood. I will never forget that on the day of my ordination to the Priesthood, just ten minutes before the Ordination Mass was to begin, I received a telegram from Randy at Saint Mary’s Cathedral in Miami in which he expressed his affection and pride for me. I still have that telegram and hold it as a great token of my respect and love for Randy.

Perhaps some of my schoolmates will be surprised by this story, especially those who, like me, were disciplined by Mr. Spreen. But for me Randy was a friend and a mentor at a crucial juncture of my youth.
