  • Professional Career

Raymond was drawn to 'figure work' ( accounting, arithmetic) from an early age. He progressed from factory floor (weaving mill) into 'Time and Motion Study". In Melbourne, Australia, he worked for a couple of years as a Prison Warder at H.M. Prison Pentridge before transferring into Stores, passing the Victorian Public Service exam, and working in accounting and administration. He worked at the Department Head Office at 55 Swanston St, Melbourne from the late '60s until 1974, when he transferred back to Pentridge as a Senior Administration Officer in the Staff Office (Personnel).
  • Personal Life & Family

Raymond was an inveterate reader, and a lifelong learner. He was particularly keen on 'science fiction', and always kept a large stack of paperbacks on the mantelpiece, next to his favourite chair. He would write long letters home to his family in England, on a heavy Remington typewriter. He was interested in audio/visual technology, such as it was in the '60s, and had a Russian-madeVega snortwave radio receiver. He made tape recordings, first reel-to-reel and later cassette. He proudly brought home a very early Sharp 'Elsi-mate' electronic calculator. He bought my brother and I a powerful telescope which was set up on the verandah, looking out over an extensive creek valley. He was reluctant as far as lawn-mowing, gardening and home maintenance tasks were concerned.
