He had siblings Archie Ag Knighton and Katherine Helen Knighton. He married Dorothy May Creamer on May 8, 1939, and had children John Raymond Knighton, Charles Mason Knighton, Sharon Sue Cota, and Wilma Carole Duke. Raymond Knighton died at age 69 years old on November 23, 1979 in EI Monte Los angeles California.

In 1928, at the age of 18 years old, Raymond was alive when Mickie Mouse was born! He first appeared in Disney's Steamboat Willie, along with Minnie. Although they were in two previous shorts, this was the first to be distributed. Steamboat Willie took advantage of the new technology and was a "talkie" - music was coordinated with the animation. It became the most popular cartoon of its day.
