Did you know?
In 1898, in the year that Raymond Simester was born, on February 15th, the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor. The reason for the explosion has never been found, but it killed 266 men. "Remember the Maine" became a rallying cry and precipitated the United States' declaration of war on Spain two months later - the beginning of the Spanish-American War. On December 10th, the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty gave the U.S. Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Guam - for $20 million - and, temporarily, Cuba.

In 1918, when he was 20 years old, on November 11th, an armistice was signed between the Allies and Germany, ending the fighting on the Western Front in World War I. This meant a complete defeat of Germany although Germany never formally surrendered. It took another six months of negotiations to sign an actual peace treaty between the warring parties.

Presidents Like You've Never Seen Them Before
While John Hanson (President of the United States in Congress Assembled) is considered by some historians as the first President of the U.S., General George Washington is generally recognized as President #1 since he began his term after the Constitution went into effect. From George Washington to Joe Biden, there have been 46 U.S. presidencies sworn into the top political office, all men. These are photos of Presidents in circumstances that you may not have seen before - from family gatherings to Franklin Delano Roosevelt getting ready to mount a horse.
