In 1806, in the year that Rebecca Perdew was born, Noah Webster published his first dictionary, A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language. It was the first truly American dictionary, incorporating the idioms and language of the day. Thus began his effort to standardize the American language, which was regionally different. It took him 26 years to complete the entire project.

In 1855, by the time she was 49 years old, on March 3rd, Congress appropriated $30,000 to create the U.S. Camel Corps. The idea was to use camels as pack animals in the Southwest and 34 camels were bought. But the Army wasn't enthusiastic about the idea and after the Civil War the Camel Corps was entirely abandoned.
