Samuel Clifford Blainey of Mount Waverley, City of Monash County, VIC Australia was born in 1899 in California Gully, Greater Bendigo City County to Samuel John Blainey. He had a sister Jean (Blainey) Bamford. He married Hilda (Lanyon) Blainey on March 19, 1927 in Box Hill, Whitehorse City County, Victoria, and had children Geoffrey Norman Blainey, Joan Hilda (Blainey) Wyatt, and John Blainey. Samuel Blainey died at age 84 years old on May 20, 1984.

In 1899, in the year that Rev Samuel Clifford Blainey was born, the meaning of Chinese "oracle bones" was rediscovered. Farmers in China had been turning up the bones in their fields for generations but most often they were ground up and sold as medicine.
