  • Introduction

Richard Allen Salmonson passed away April 6th, in his home in Thorhild, Alberta. Richard was born May 13,1927, in Muskegon Heights, Michigan to Carl Salmonson and Nellie Ling. Anticipating adventure and a chance to travel, Richard was 17 when he enlisted with the U.S. Navy and served in active duty during World War II in Okinawa, Japan. In the mid-1950's, Dick disappeared while fishing near Muskegon, MI, and was presumed dead, leaving behind wife Beverly, children Edward, Linda and David. Richard pursued a career in the newspaper and printing field, which eventually brought him to Alberta. Operating the presses for the Alberta Report and helping with the outdoor adventure trips with the Saint John's School of Alberta, Richard cultivated many relationships that would endure throughout his life. There, he met Marlene Joy Keller, who would be his wife for 27 years and the mother of his three daughters: Carley, Hilary, and Ann. Richard and his bride moved to Thorhild to raise their young family. Wanting to be his own boss, Richard nurtured his entrepreneurial spirit and in the late 80s, he and his wife opened a letterpress business. Joy Letterpress supported and challenged his family till Richard retired in the spring of 2005. In the winter of 2006, Richard welcomed the arrival of his wonderful grandson Elijah and granddaughter Hilary Jr. Richard was always an adventurer, a lover of the outdoors, possessor of an ever curious mind, a quick wit and a sharp sense of humour, an inventor, a dreamer, a man who took delight in life's simple pleasures, a man who lived with integrity and loved with sincerity.
