I have not researched Dad's mother Ethel. His father abandoned the family without notice when Dick was about 20. He only used to say his dad was a streetcar driver. His grandfather's history was much the same, he would also sadly say. Dad worked in a steel mill before joining the army in 1941. He had a younger sister Alice, who developed Muscular Dystrophy, I think in her early 20's. She spent a lot of time in hospitals and Ethel had to devote her life to her care, while doing some part-time department store work. Doctors told Alice she wouldn't live much past 30, but she got to 60. After the war, Dick moved to Columbus OH to study architecture at OSU where he met Mary Elizabeth Ranney. Her family is well-researched and dates back to early 1600 at Middletown Upper Houses, in CT. They had 3 kids, 2 boys, then a very special girl to whom Dick was very affectionate in a most nurturing way. Unfortunately, divorce would divide the family and send Dick and Betty in separate directions, just when his architecture career was taking off.

My best memories of Dad are near the end, other than the occasional tough love parenting outburst. He took up golf around the same time I did and that was what we shared. My life went off course, some might say during college- no money for education and no specific course of study interested me. I worked for dad doing busy work drawing and inking, and saved money to buy a one-way ticket to London. After being gone for 4 months I came home in late August with a renewed interest in improving all my family relations. As for me and Dad, that only lasted about 2 weeks. Today is his birthday, time for some reminescing
