I have to confess that I am a little confused by this entry. I am a direct descendent of the Comins family. My mother, born in Sutton, Surrey, UK in 1915, was Dorothy Mary Comins, her father being George Howe Comins who was born in Lambeth, London in 1876. His father was John Shuckburgh Comins who was born in South Molton, Devon, UK in 1852, whose father was, in turn, Richard Comins who was born in Tiverton, Devon, UK in 1818 and married Catherine Mack How in 1847. We have no record of Richard ever visiting Australia so the claim that he died in Collingwood is rather confusing. So also is the daughter Catherine, as we have records that Richard and Catherine Mack had 4 children, John already mentioned, Jessica Deane Comins born in 1850 in South Molton and dying there 2 years later, Emily Stevens Comins born in Tiverton in 1857 and then dying in Crediton, Devon, UK in 1862. The other child was another Richard - Richard Blundell Comins born in Tiverton in 1848. This Richard married an Alice Forrest in 1882 and the couple then became missionaries, firstly in the Solomon Islands and then in New Zealand where Richard died in 1919. I wonder therefore if there is some confusion between the two records, although as Richard died in New Zealand I can't see how Collingwood can be correct. The name Blundell is of interest as I have in my possession a lithograph of Peter Blundell, a cloth and silk merchant who was a supplier of silk stockings to Queen Elizabeth the First, and also the founder of a public grammar school which bears his name in his home town of Tiverton. The picture has been inscribed on the back in ink in the hand of Catherine Mack Comins with the words "This print of Peter Blundell belongs to Richard Comins, his wife and family - 30th August 1852. RC" and is signed Catherine Mack Comins. I can't think that she would be giving her 4 year old son the picture and inscribing it in such terms and therefore assume it much have been a gift or a bequest from her husband's side of the family. I believe Richard's father was one Thomas Comins of Witheridge, a little village some 11 miles North of Tiverton (and where in fact I spent the first 3 years of my life). We do know that the family links back to Peter Blundell himself. Peter was born in about 1520 and died in Tiverton in 1601. He never married, but his sister Eleanore married a John Chilcott of Morchard Bishop, Devon. The Chilcott family also used the surname Comins (spelt Comyns) at the time and it would appear that the link is in this marriage, whether through John and Eleanore themselves, or through a sibling of John. We are still trying to establish the link.
