    Richard John Klenkel was born to John Philip Klenkel (1903 - 1966) and Helen E. Goedecker (1907 - 1975). His father was born in New York and his mother was born in New Jersey. Richard had two siblings: Margaret K. and Louis A. Klenkel. Richard Klenkel married Doris Anne Ritter (1927 - 2016) on August 7, 1954 in Spring Valley, New York. Richard was also a member of the fire department for 49 years and served as chief from 1986 - 1987. He was a member of the Fifth Battalion Chiefs Association and the Fire Police.

    On his World War II draft card, Richard was described as being 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 160 pounds. He had blue eyes, brown hair, and a "light" complexion. Richard married Doris Anne Ritter (1927 - 2016) on July 31, 1954 in Glen Cove, New York. They had three children, Richard Jr., Laurie, and Suellen. He was survived by three grandchildren. He was involved in the local YMCA for many years, volunteering his services by maintaining the pool. In 1975, he received the YMCA Man of the Year Award. He was also a member of the Glen Cove Lodge 580 Free and Accepted Masons.

    RICHARD J. KLENKEL SR., EX-FIRE DEPARTMENT CHIEF Richard j. Klenkel Sr., a lifelong Glen Cove resident and former chief of the Glen Cove Fire Department, died at home November 27 of natural causes. He was 70. Mr. Klenkel was a member of the fire department for 49 years and served as chief from 1986 - 1987. He was a member of the Fifth Battalion Chiefs Association and the Fire Police. After graduating from Glen Cove High School, he attended the State University of New York at Farmingdale, where he earned an associate's degree in heating and air conditioning, said his son, Richard Klenkel Jr., of Glen Cover. After college, Mr. Klenkel worked for his father, John P. Klenkel, in the plumbing business and later joined Hawkins Cover Oil Supply in Glen Cover where he worked for 23 years. After leaving Hawkins, he worked as a plumber for New York Institute of Technology for the past 20 years. While employed at Hawkins and NYIT, he trained many of the younger men entering the trade, his son said. "Coworkers and friends who worked with my father over the years would often pull me aside and tell me there isn't anything he couldn't do. That he had more knowledge than anyone they've ever met," said his son, a former Glen Cove city councilman. He married in 1954 and as a wedding present for his wife, Doris, he built her a ranch home in Glen Cove. "He really cared about his family and the community. He was a very devoted man, he loved us, loved the family, he would do anything for anybody at the drop of a hat" his wife said. Mr. Klenkel was involved in the local YMCA for many years, volunteering his services by maintaining the pool. In 1975, he received the YMCA Man of the Year Award. He was also an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Glen Cove and of the Glen Cove Lodge 580 Free and Accepted Masons. In addition to his son and wife, surviving are two daughters, Laurie Hempton of Alexandria, Virginia and Suellen Galluccio of Glen Cove; a brother, Louis Kenkel of Bowie, Maryland and three grandchildren. Services were held December 1 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Contributions in Mr. Klenkel's memory can be made to the Glen Cove Fire Department, Glen Cove EMS of St. Paul's Church. - Newsday (Suffolk Edition) on Monday, December 7, 1998 on page 34.
