Richard Lewis Shackford was born on October 8, 1914 in Dedham, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States to parents Irwin Lewis Shackford (1892-1964) and Annette Mabel Parsons (1892-1973). At the time of his WWII draft registration on October 16, 1940, he was 26 years old and residing in Worcester, Massachusetts. He was employed by the Worcester Slate Hospital at the time. Richard then enlisted in the military on August 7, 1942, in Springfield, Massachusetts. He was initially assigned to the Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers in the United States Army. He married Lillian Mary Astramowicz (1918-1970) in April of 1944 in Wayland, Norfolk, England. The couple had three children together including Richard Michael Shackford (1945-) and Lewis Donald Shackford (1954-2020).
