  • Ethnicity & Family History

Richard was a stocky man, tall and muscular in build, well suited for playing baseball for the local town team, and league bowling, both which he loved. His mother was from Cechloslovacia, and emigrated to the United States at an young age, not quite sure at what age. His father was born in Johnstown or possibly Altoona Pennsylvania and his father came from the Syracuse region of Sicily, Italy. I am not sure at this time where his mother was from, but know she was of Italian decent. Richard had a younger brother , John, known as “Jacky” Scrofani, and no other siblings.
  • Nationality & Locations

As near as I can figure, his family stayed in the Hooversville Johnstown area, until about age five. Grandpa Joe took the family East for work. I have some of Richards early school papers which tell he entered the Longfellow School in 1932, in Mount Vernon New York. It was “the Depression” and families did what they had to to get by. Gram Anna told me they were taken in by a family named Tucci, until they found a place of they’re own. Don’t know much else about him in those years, but one paper from Washington Junior High School in Mount Vernon showed him courteous but rambunctious. His interest in baseball was keen, and that’s what he liked the most about school.
  • Early Life & Education

As I mention before he attended Longfellow Elementary School in Mount Vernon NY, then went on to Washington Junior High School, not much official info from there, but know he took up the trumpet, and became good at it. He was a music lover and I remember Saturday mornings when he was off work, the record player would be going. He liked the music of the bullfighting ring, most likely because of the dominance of the trumpet. I believe, it was at this time his interest in baseball became more promenade. Several newspaper articles from the local papers sports page survived, showing his membership on the Mount Carmel “Blue Soxs” team which was part of the local C.Y.O. league. He was the principle pitcher for the team. One article tells of him, on a hot streak, striking out 36 at bats in 3 games, and the final game leaving only one hit from the opposing team scoring 0 runs!

  • Religious Beliefs

I have no records of early church life , but know he and my mother were married at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Mount Vernon NY. When the family moved to Port Washington NY, they attended St. Peter of Alcantara Church regularly. My Dad was faithful man, lived what he believed, always kind and considerate, and helpful to others.
  • Military Service

My fathers life was impacted by WWII, because his father was drafted by the Army. His father was sent to Indiana , to work at the Eli Lilly Co. which at the time we’re making medicines for troops and civilians. He was there for 2 years. My dad was 16 at that time, he decided to leave high school, and at age 17 enlisted in the Merchant Marine. He served on cargo ships between NY and Panama. When he became 18, he enlisted in the US Army in Panama. His job was in the motor pool and truck transport. The war was over, and he was discharged from service due to reduction of troop strength, and returned home.
  • Professional Career

After his military service was over, Richard married Margaret Retta, my Mom, in 1947. Through an acquaintance of my Grandpa Joe, he met a cousin living in Port Washington NY, who owned a grocery market, that he was wanting to sell. It was called the “Premier Market”.Grandpa Joe bought it, and all members off the family including Richard would work it for the next 10 years. The market prospered very well, and my dad managed it pretty much in the last years. Grandpa Joe passed away in 1956, and Richard and Grandma Anna, continued for 2 more years, and decided to sell the business. Richard went to work as a route salesman for the Hires Soda company, for a number of years, and the as as a route salesman for the Century Candy Co. of Huntington NY until the time of his passing. The partners of the company, Arthur and Jess Popkin, were very generous, during his illness, continuing to pay him until he died.
  • Personal Life & Family

I know Richard was proud to be an American. Although he did not often comment on politics, he was conservative in his thinking, and always voted at election time. He had many friends, stemming from the Premier Market, which continued even after it sold. Some of the route salesmen who serviced the store I sure guided him in the next move in life. One in particular was Dave Walsh of Port Washington. He was a route driver for Dr. Pepper and 7 up. They were on the same bowling team, and frequently at our house. When Richard got terminally sick, Dave was a true friend to him and our family, helping to the end. Richard was a car guy. He bought his first new car(Plymouth 2 door) in 1955, after a long line of used cars. Most Saturdays or Sundays when he wasn’t playing baseball for the local town team, had something to do with the car. It lasted a long time. He was also a member of the local Elks Club.
